Coffee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 87,781. The county seat is Douglas.
The county was created on December 5, 1854, from land acquired from Berrien and Irwin counties. It was named for General John Coffee, who fought in the War of 1812 and in the Mexican-American War.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.6%) is water.
The eastern border of Coffee County is defined by the Flint River. The western border is defined by the Chattahoochee River.
The population density was 112 people per square mile (43/km²). There were 36,882 housing units at an average density of 45 per square mile (17/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 67.06% White, 29.19% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 3.06% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 36,882 households out of which 33.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.60% were married couples living together, 15.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% were non-families. 23.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.06.

Who is General Coffee?
General James Jackson Coffee (March 15, 1824 – October 15, 1894) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War. He is most noted for his victory at the Battle of Jonesborough.
Coffee was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, the son of James and Rebecca (née Glass) Coffee. He was educated at Cumberland College in Lebanon, Tennessee, and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1846. He was assigned to the 1st U.S. Dragoons, and served in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1849 and captain in 1855.
At the start of the Civil War, Coffee was assigned to the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. He was promoted to major in May 1861 and to brigadier general of volunteers in November 1861. He was assigned to command a brigade in the Army of the Ohio, and fought in the Battle of Shiloh. He was promoted to major general of volunteers in March 1862.
In the fall of 1862, Coffee was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland. He led a division at the Battle of Stones River, and was promoted to lieutenant general in March 1863. He led his division at the Battle of Chickamauga, and was wounded in the thigh. He was assigned to command the XX Corps in the Army of the Cumberland, and fought in the Battle of Chattanooga.
In the Atlanta Campaign, Coffee led the XX Corps in the Battle of Resaca, the Battle of Dallas, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and the Battle of Atlanta. He was brevetted to general in the United States Army in August 1864. In the Franklin-Nashville Campaign, he led the XX Corps in the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville.
Coffee retired from the army in 1869, and was promoted to full general in the Regular Army in March 1877. He died at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
